Cal2K Combustion Calorimeter System
This combustion calorimeter, the CAL2K, is a small desktop apparatus. It performs the temperature analysis of a sample. The operator, balance, vessel and PC interface together. It is insulated against ambient temperature changes via an "air barrier" and polystyrene. The ambient temperature is measured. It "fires" the sample by heating the firing wire inside the vessel.
The vessel or "combustion" chamber is made out of stainless steel, and tested up to a pressure of 300 atmospheres (4200 psi). A small sample is placed in the crucible and the vessel is pressurized with oxygen. The vessel can also be pressurized with compressed air, or inert gas for special applications. As the sample is pressurized and ignited, the released energy is measured as a temperature rise. The "SMART" vessel has its own processor and memory.
The CAL2K system uses a dry isothermal method. This method requires no water inside the calorimeter. An aluminum sleeve that is an integral part of the vessel, replaces the water bucket. The sleeve transfers the heat from the combustion process rapidly and evenly around the outside shell of the vessel. The temperature sensors are located between the combustion vessel and the sleeve. The temperature rise of the vessel is measured to determine the calorific value of the sample. The water jacket is replaced by polystyrene that is insulated by an aluminum box. The timing of the determination and the quality of the insulation is such that the environment has a negligible effect on the determination. Additionally, there is no need for a circulator.
Two versions are available; CAL2K Eco for routine work and CAL2K for throughput.
